What is a Vape Coil and what does it do?
The Coil, which can also be called the atomiser is a vital and intrinsic part of the vaping process. It is the heating element of your vape kit that heats up the e-liquid and allows you to vape. The coil really is the beating heartbeat of the device and is normally housed inside the vape tank or pod.
The atomiser consists of a coiled piece of wire which heats up and some wicking material which is normally cotton (but can be other materials). This wicking material soaks up the e-liquid that is in the tank or pod and when the vape device is turned on it simply heats the coil, which turns the e-liquid into vapour. The two components of the vape coil work in conjunction with each other with the wick providing a constant supply of e-liquid whilst the wire heats up and turns it into vapour. Vape coils are a replaceable component in vape kits and tanks and come in a wide range of resistance, build and material options, allowing vapers to personalise their vaping experience.
Types of vape coils
On the face of it all coils are designed to vapourise e-liquid, however with so many options on the market they can perform very differently depending on the type you choose.
Firstly, coils are made using different types of wire and wicks which can have a huge effect on the amount of vapour produced as well as the intensity of the flavour and longevity of your coil.
In addition to this, vape coils are also available in a wide range of different resistances. This can be roughly categorised into sub-ohm (less than 1 ohm resistance) and higher resistance coils. (more than 1 ohm). We’ll talk about ohm’s in more detail later.
Ceramic vape coils are constructed differently to a standard coil as they don’t use a simple cotton wick but instead contain a layer of ceramic or a combination of cotton and ceramic. They are more porous than other coils which allows more air to pass through the ceramic material giving you a silky-smooth draw and enhanced flavour.
One of the most obvious benefits of the ceramic coil technology is the delivery of the purest flavour possible. There is nothing inside a ceramic coil that can interfere with or affect the flavour of the e-liquid. In addition, the ceramic coil minimises the chance of experiencing a burnt taste with dry hits.
Ceramic coils are renowned for having a longer life span as ceramic can withstand much higher temperatures and also offers protection against damage from dry hits.
Spit backs are less likely with ceramic coils as any e-liquid that spits out of the coil needs to travel through the ceramic before reaching your mouth. There are also tiny pores within the ceramics to discourage e-liquid pooling around your coil.
Ceramic coils are self-cleaning allowing more time for vaping and less time for maintenance!
One of the disadvantages of the ceramic coils is that they consume juice faster than standard coils. Whilst this correlates with performance benefits, it is also something to consider when selecting your coils.
Mesh coils made a massive impression on the industry when they were launched into the vaping market. They became the number 1 choice for lots of vaping enthusiasts very quickly. Unlike traditional coils which feature a piece of wound wire, mesh coils feature a curved mesh net of metal, often made of something like Kanthal or Nichrome. This creates a larger surface area of metal that comes into contact with your wicking material which allows it to heat more e-liquid quicker. This results in the vaper experiencing both enhanced flavour and increased vapour production. Because the surface area is spread out, this results in even heating, cooler vape, less risk of a dry hit and less risk of a “hot spot” forming like on traditional coils. Therefore, your coil will also last longer.
Mesh coils are generally used for sub-ohm vaping as they are capable of withstanding the higher power and heat associated with sub-ohm devices.
Stainless steel Coils
When it comes to coils, stainless steel is one of the most versatile as you can use it both at high and low wattage and in more advanced temperature control mod devices.
What are Ohms?
Back to school we go! Simply put Ohms are the measurement of resistance in metal. In our vape devices, it is directly proportional to how much vapour the coil will produce. If you have a coil that has what we class as a higher resistance (above 1 ohm) you will create less vapour and therefore need less power from your device. Perfect for discreet vaping. When you drop the resistance to below 1 ohm we call it Sub Ohm. You’ve probably worked it out, but these coils produce more vapour but require more power. Perfect if you’re cloud chasing!
How to Choose My Coil
With so many coils available on the vaping market, it’s important to select the correct one to achieve your desired results. Focus on what you want from you vaping experience to guide you in selecting your perfect coil. If you want a fairly discreet vaping experience, then going for a coil with a resistance over 1 ohm is going to work for you. This also means you will want to look at e-liquids that are generally a 50/50 blend or high PG. This sort of vaping is known as mouth to lung vaping (MTL) which is most similar to how you would smoke a cigarette.
If you like the idea of producing big clouds and have a device with more power, you might decide to go down the sub-ohm route. These coils have a lower resistance of less than 1.0 Ohm and will produce large amounts of vapour. These sub-ohm coils need to be used with high VG e-liquids, like those often found in short fill e-liquids. Sub-ohm vaping is more commonly associated with direct to lung vaping (DTL). This is normally something that you should progress onto rather than if you’re just starting out on your vaping journey

Coils with a resistance less than 1 Ohm are classified as sub-ohm coils and therefore it is recommended that these should only be used by experienced vapers. These coils need a lot more power and generate larger vapour clouds so it is best to use e-liquids with a high VG content. It is also recommended vapers use a maximum nicotine strength of 6mg due to the larger amounts of vapour produced.
